Books have been the major source of entertainment before the entrant of cinemas and they still are regarded with high honor. And naturally, our cine world has often turned to this medium for inspiration in movie making.

1. Guide:dev-anand-film-guide-1965

This movie was made in the year 1965 starring the evergreen hero Dev Anand and was based on the novel written by R K Narayan under the same name. The only difference is the end of the movie which is slightly different from that of the novel.

2. Tere Mere Sapne:2516-tere-mere-sapne-1996

Again a movie starring Dev Anand, this 1971 movie was based on A J Cronin’s novel The Citadel. This was made in Bengali and in Telugu also in the later years.

3. Devdas:devdas-2002-455

The movie was an adaptation of the novel of the same name from Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, a Bengali author. There have been many movies made in multiple languages like Hindi, Malayalam, Bengali based on the same novel over the years. However, the 2002 make by Sanjay Leela Bhansali became a huge hit in the Box Office.

4. Maqbool:1maqbool

An adaptation of the famous Shakespearean novel Macbeth, this movie was from the house of Vishal Bharadwaj and released in the year 2003. The movie featured the renowned actor Naseeruddin Shah along with Tabu, Pankaj Kapoor, Om Puri and Irfan Khan.

5. Omkara:omkara

This was yet another movie based on a novel by Shakespeare. Inspired by the “Othello”, Vishal Bharadwaj was the director of this movie too and featured Kareena Kapoor, Ajay Devgan, Saif Ali Khan in the lead roles. The movie was released in 2006.

6. 3 Idiots:

This movie was inspired by the book “Five Point Someone” written by Chetan Bhagat. The movie was so well written and taken that it broke all the records of the box office making the highest revenue in the many years of Bollywood Cinema.

7. Saawariya:saa10e

Another movie by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, this was based on the short story by Fyodor Dostoevsky, titled “White Nights”. While the movie was not a big hit, it was the first one to come in the Blue Ray and was debut movie for the star children Sonam Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor.

8. 7 Khoon Maaf:7-khoon-maaf

A short story “Susanna’s Seven husbands” written by Ruskin Bond is the inspiration behind this movie starring Priyanka Chopra. It was not a very well received movie both at the audience and at the critic front. But it nevertheless made a profitable release.

9. Aisha:aisha_1

A movie made from the classic “Emma” from Jane Austen, the movie has Sonam Kapoor and Abhay Deol in the lead. The movie did not fare well in the box office though.

10. Kai Po Che!:maxresdefault

Another movie from the book of Chetan Bhagat, “The Three Mistakes of my Life”, this movie starring a young and fresh casting did quite well in the box office.

It is not surprising to see that books are considered quite an inspiration for movies. After all, they were the pioneers for creation of an imaginary world prior to the entrant of cinemas.
