It is not every day that one goes to a small town, non-hill station and non-touristy spot. But yet the town might surprise you with what it has got to offer. A peaceful town with local attractions that can be easily visited at any hour of the day. It might not take more than a day of sightseeing for travelers, but if someone really wants to explore the city at its best, 2-3 days are required.
At a distance of 15kms from the town on the National Highway 215, is a beautiful surprise of nature. Because of water emerging like a swordâ€™s edge after it falls from the steep mountain onto a flat surface, the name Khandahar has been given to it which means â€œBowâ€. It is the fourth largest waterfall of the country and has no entry fees attached to its visit. One can do picnic on the small river side and can even relinquish the thirst for some nature photography.
At the close of the confluence of River Shankha, River Saraswati and River Koel, is this holy spot. According to mythology, it is said that Maharishi Ved Vyas, the writer of the Epic Mahabharatha, scripted it at this very place. It is also famous for its Vedic Ashram and Gurukula system of education. One can explore the caves with the help of the boats. Also, one can enjoy the nature amidst all the smoke of iron plants. It provides a splendid view of the town as well as the power plant.
If waterfalls are to be found only in the hill stations, then till town will surprise you. In the Balangir district, a temple is situated close to the waterfall on the southern slope of the Gandhamardhan hills. A holy and beautiful place, the name of the temple is dedicated to two Hindu Gods, Hari and Shankar. According to legends, goodness of both the Gods had combined near the waterfall. The place sees a lot of devotees and one can find idols of both the Gods in between the river.
Vaishno Devi Temple
If one is not able to travel all the way to north to take blessings of God at The Vaishno Devi temple, they can take it from this one. An exact replica of the famous Vaishno Devi temple in Kashmir, it is situated on the top of a small hill. The idols of Maa Saraswati, Maa Kali and Maa Lakshmi that house this temple are said to have been found on the hilltop in the year 2000 and the temple was constructed in the year 2003. The festival of Navratri is celebrated joyously here. However, if one is not a firm believer of going to the temples, one can visit this place for the sheer view of the city along with the steel plant.
It is another famous attraction in the town which houses numerous deer. It is located close to the popular Jubilee Park of the town and has beautiful musical fountains to entertain its visitors.
